Today we know that the Earth rotates around the Sun, but people did not always believe this. In the 16th century, it was believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. For many years, no one could prove whether the Sun rotated around the Earth or the opposite. That changed when Hans Lipperhey, who was a Dutch eyeglass maker, invented the telescope in 1608. However, at around the same time, another eyeglass maker claimed that he invented the telescope and the microscope. That man was Zacharias Janssen, who lived in the same town as Lipperhey. In the end, Hans Lipperhey was credited as the inventor of the telescope and Zacharias Janssen as the inventor of the microscope.
In 1609, Galileo Galilei, who was an Italian astronomer, heard about the telescope and decided to make one himself. His telescope could make objects twenty to thirty times bigger. He was also the first person to use a telescope to look at the sky. He discovered that the moon, which was believed to have a smooth surface, had mountains and craters. He found out that Jupiter had moons. He also realized that sometimes Venus was closer to Earth, and sometimes it was farther. This made him believe that the planets in the Solar system, including Earth, move around the Sun.
Thanks to this simple device, our view of the universe changed forever, and we started looking into the sky and wondering what’s out there.

2. The different uses of earphones
I think earphones are probably the most important invention of modern times because they have changed our lives in many ways.
Earphones stop you annoying other people in the same room. For example, you could not play music, watch movies with the sound up, or play games without being told to “turn the sound down!” if you did not have them.
Earphones are great for journeys, such as going to school or on trip because you can listen to podcasts or music while you travel. I always listen to something on the school bus, so I do not get bored, and it makes the journey seem quicker, too.
Earphones have changed the way people study. For example, I use my earphones when I want to do my homework. They stop any other noise from disturbing me. I also use my earphones when I am talking to someone on my cell phone. Even if I am on a busy street, I can hear what they are saying.
