1. Modal verbs with if:

if + present tense, modal + verb

– Modal verb: must, can, could, may, might, ought to, have to, should, … có thể được dùng trong câu điều kiện if để diễn đạt một điều gì đó chắc chắn hoặc có khả năng xảy ra trong hiện tại hoặc tương lai.

E.g:  If you study hard, you will pass the exam.

       If Tom jogs regularly, he might lose weight.

– Động từ tình thái cũng có thể được dùng với  if để khuyên ai đó nên hành động như thế nào nếu muốn làm một điều gì đó.

E.g: If you want to drive a car, you must have a driving license.

       If Christ is going to a job interview, he  should wear a tie.

2. Direct and reported speech

– here and now words in reported speech

– reported  questions:

a. Yes / No questions:

S + asked / wanted to know / wondered + if / whether + S + V

E.g: “Are you angry?” he asked if / whether I was hungry.

b. Wh – questions:

S + asked (+O) / wanted to know / wondered + Wh – words + S + V.

* says / say to + O; asks / ask + O

said to + O; asked + O

E.g: “What are you talking about?” said the teacher.

The teacher asked us what we were talking about.
