II. ĐIỂM NGỮ PHÁP (LANGUAGE FOCUS):

1. Past simple with regular verbs:

- We can use Past Simple to talk about an action that started and finished in the past. We often say when it happened, e.g: yesterday, last night, three days ago. We can put the time marker at the beginning or the end of a sentence.

E.g: Last month, we raised money to help the local charity.

       He donated some books last weekend.

- We form question with did and the infinitive.

Did you volunteer at a soup kitchen?

+ Yes,  I did. / No, I didn’t.

When  did you volunteer at the soup kitchen?

- We form negative statements with didn’t and the infinitive.

We didn’t donate books. We donated clothes. 

2. Past Simple – Spelling rules for -ed:

- We form the Past Simple of regular verbs by adding – ed to the verbs.

   clean -> cleaned, volunteer -> volunteered

- For verbs ending with -e, we add -d. (Đối với những động từ kết thúc với -e, chúng ta thêm -d.)

like ->  liked, live -> lived

- For verbs ending with consonant  +  y, we change  y to  i and add – ed. (Đối với động từ kết thúc bằng phụ âm +y, ta đổi y thành i và thêm – ed)

try -> tried, fry -> fried. 

- For one – syllable verbs ending with one consonant, then one vowel and one consonant, we double the last consonant and add – ed. (Đối với một động từ có nhiềm âm tiết kết thúc bằng một phụ âm, sau đó là một nguyên âm và một phụ âm, chúng ta nhân đôi phụ âm cuối và thêm – ed.)

plan -> planned, stop ->    stopped.

3. Using “should”, “Let’s” and “How about” to make suggestions.

- We can make suggestions to offer ideas or plans for someone to think about. Here are four ways we can make suggestions.

1. should + bare infinitive

We should put “Run for Fun” on the poster.

2. Let’s + bare infinitive:

Let’s have a fun run.

We use Let’s not + bare infinitive for negative suggestions,

Let’s not argue about this. 

3. How about + V-ing?  

How about organizing a craft fair?

4. How about + Subject + Verb (Present Simple)? 

How about we organize a bake sale?

Exercise 1: Circle the correct definitions for the underlined words.
